What Happens at a Learning and Play Studio

Learning Studios

Baby Riot has two large drop-in play spaces that are separated by developmental movement level into new/early movers and more confident movers.  Each area offers engaging play invitations that focus on supporting sensory play, practicing motor skills, building, science and math, and dramatic play opportunities.

Our atelier is an additional space that focuses in on one topic for exploration. Examples include:

  • Light

  • Color

  • Sound

  • Things that go

  • Cardboard

All of our studios change with the seasons, growing different focuses and supporting new ways to approach emerging developmental needs while  reflecting the seasonal and emerging things we all  experience together living in the vibrant city of Portland, Oregon.

Classes

Baby Riot offers weekday and Saturday morning classes, divided into three learning groups determined by where children currently are working in regard to their mobility.

Our earliest movers are in the Circle cohort, focusing on learning that supports intentional grasp and release, rolling, scooting, pulling, sitting, reaching, and more.

Our Honeycomb cohort focuses on supporting emerging locomotion, creeping, crawling, pulling up, standing, and walking.

The Star cohort is for confident walkers, early runners, climbers, and jumpers. Lessons in this cohort are more complex and built around emerging social and emotional dynamics.

Each season, Baby Riot offers 10-week classes following a shared learning theme that offer guided thematic play experiences, provocations and learning ideas, and class materials that help reproduce or continue the studio activities at home. Cohort classes thoughtfully utilize books and music, sensory, art, gross motor, and fine motor provocations during each 45 minute session while focusing on modeling and supporting ways for caregivers to recognize and support early learning with their child.

Our Philosophy:

Baby Riot is a creative learning space for children 0 - 3 and their caregivers.  Our drop-in indoor play studio environments challenge and encourage children to problem solve, experiment, and explore their ideas in a space that is developmentally and age appropriate for their learning needs.  We are hands on, full-throttle explorers and offer quarterly classes based in infant and toddler development and interests. Drawing from over 25 years of teaching experience, our curriculum and environments change seasonally and are well rounded to support a child's interests and development, with areas that focus on language and litteracy, social and emotional development, gross and fine motor skills, self awareness and identity, math, music, science, sensory, dramatic play, and art.  We offer supportive and informative play sessions that help caregivers understand different emerging skills and provide resources to continue to support learning at home.

What Folks
Are Saying:

"Kiki is incredibly knowledgeable on stages of development and utilizes this to set up creative learning environments that are child-driven, engaging, age appropriate and novel: Art projects, music, activities to build fine and gross motor skills, and activities that encourage curiosity through play."
